The Hills Are Alive With The Sound of Music

King Street Players Production

April 15th 2007 -- The King Street Players are reprising their production of the Rogers & Hammerstein musical the Sound of Music.  Most of the cast from last years production are returning with the exception of a couple of the Von Trapp children who have outgrown their parts and the Baroness.

The hills are alive and well on Millbrook stage

Doctors Caroline Taylor and Robin Whale will have their chemistry down pat when they hit the stage as leads in The Sound of Music later this month.

The Port Hope couple has been together for almost three years, coming into the King Street Players production with a level of comfort most actors don't have.

"I'm not afraid of kissing him," quips Dr. Taylor.

But both actors, who are also chiropractic doctors with a practice in Millbrook, weren't chosen to play Maria and Captain Von Trapp because of their off-stage relationship.

Dan Shaer, musical director of the production, says they were chosen on their merits as performers and singers.

Dr. Whale says he's pleased to be acting alongside his partner, adding he finds courage when he sings with her.

"The chemistry is already there...the lines will have good authenticity to them because we are in love," says Dr. Whale.

This is the first production Dr. Whale has been in, not counting a Grade 6 production of Pinocchio. He admits he's nervous but plans to draw upon his public speaking experiences to get over the butterflies.

He says can also turn to the cast for help and guidance.

"There have been some magic moments already [during rehearsals] when the kids hit the keys perfectly," adds Dr. Whale.

Dr. Taylor has some experience on the stage but more in terms of singing than acting with the Northumberland Choir. She loves The Sound of Music, saying she watched it regularly as a child.

"I saw it coming to town and told Dan Shaer I'd like to try out," says Dr. Taylor.

Mr. Shaer is impressed with the cast he and a group of directors have brought together. He says they added a children's choir to the production to showcase their voices.

This is the King Street Players' first production.

Mr. Shaer says they chose The Sound of Music because it's a most loved musical that's celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. It also ties in with the King Street Art Council's Vienna theme for 2006.

"We have the chamber orchestra of the Vienna Symphony coming here April 15.

"It's like bringing Elvis to town. It's an historic event."

The Sound of Music runs March 31 to April 8 at the King Street Centre for the Arts in Millbrook.
